Sachin (Prateik) is a regular guy-22 year old engineering graduate from a middle class family in Mumbai who is in love with the world of cinema and aspires to become a film maker. Thats Ek Deewana Tha – As a struggler in the film industry-where his long days are filled with waiting and then some more waiting, surviving on his father’s pocket money and desperately trying to make an entry into any of the main film camps-there is nothing that makes each day worth looking forward to. Ek Deewana Tha movie review…
He is introduced to a bollywood cinematographer Anay (Manu Rishi) and with his help Sachin gets to work as an assistant to veteran director Ramesh Sippy.
Sachin stays with his sister and parents, who are Hindu Brahmins in a rented house which belongs to Jessie’s (Amy Jackson) father. The landlords of this house are conservative Malayali Christian family from Kerala and Jessie has come to Mumbai after her graduation.
And that’s when he comes across Jessie (Amy Jackson), and it is love at first sight for him. Jessie is beautiful, elegant, smart and classy. But Jessie is not that simple. Jessie belongs to an orthodox Malayali Christian family where watching movies, partying or falling in love are completely taboo.
Sachin tries to interact with Jessie, who is afraid of speaking to men around her strict father and a protective brother, and ends up angering Jessie.
Wanting to express his feelings for her, Sachin confesses his love for her, to which she does not respond. Instead, a few days later, Sachin’s sister informs him that Jessie has gone back to Kerala to visit her grandmother.
While Sachin battles with the idea of someone like Jessie and her family living in 21st century, modern Mumbai-he finds himself increasingly drawn to her. Jessie, for her part, tries to forge a friendship between them-believing that cloaking their feelings under the umbrella of friendship would save them heartache, tears and a full blown family drama.
Anyway, with Anay’s company, Sachin ends up in Kerala in search of the love of his life. During a Sunday mass in one of the churches in Kerala, he finds her, apologizes and she introduces him to her uncles and grandmother as her “classmate”. Still the girl isn’t sure whether she has any feelings for him, yet wants to be his friend.
It all happens during the train journey back home where the two get closer and share a romantic heart-melting passionate kiss. The boy is convinced that now the girl loves him. Back in Mumbai, Jessie admits that she also likes Sachin, yet wants to remain uncommitted realizing that her orthodox Christian dad wouldn’t approve of an alliance with a Hindu boy.
An intense, yet feel good love story of these 2 very different characters – Ek Deewana Tha, as they understand the pangs and pleasure of first love while battling with the situations that life has placed them in making Sachin question all the time – Of all the people in the world why did I fall in love with Jessie?
Ekk Deewana Tha is worth a watch it for the master A. R. Rahman’s music and its melodious songs.
